Mixing 3 Patterns • Crazy Times, Crazy Clashes!

Leopard, stripes and checks • Pattern mixing • Fat Fabulous

Today, I'm mixing 3 patterns together and although I've called this post "Crazy Clashes" the clash isn't really crazy at all.

The 3 patterns involved in this look are:

  • Checks
  • Leopard
  • Stripes

For me, stripes and leopard are true classics... neutrals, even... so they hardly count as patterns at all!

{Okay, the leopard here is a RED leopard, but it still feels quite classic to me.}

Leopard, stripes and checks • Pattern mixing • Fat Fabulous

Mixing Breton stripes and leopard print is a timeless option and always looks good, especially if you swapped out the red leopard for a classic tan-coloured leopard print.

Adding a check is an easy and obvious option for me.
A gent's checked blazer works well to create an effortless look.

This isn't really what I was wearing today.
I've been slobbing around in joggers and gigantic jumpers.
However, the hairband IS something I've been wearing as it does a great job of covering up my grey roots and badly-needing-cut hair!

However, I still wanted to provide you with some light-hearted content during these difficult times.

If you've ever fancied trying a "Crazy Clash' then now is the perfect time to do it!

How do you feel about mixing patterns?
Do you think stripes and leopard are classics that can be classed as neutrals?

Orange and Turquoise Spring Outfit • Fake Fabulous

I'm not going to pretend that I'm ACTUALLY WEARING this outfit today.
I'm not.
I'm wearing a pair of baggy-bummed joggers and an oversized jumper... with a hole in the armpit.

Reality isn't pretty!

At the moment, reality is pretty crap.

So, I popped on some colourful clothes and a bit of lippy because I wanted to share a colour injection with you.

A burst of brightness in the gloom.

Maybe you're more pulled together than I am and are actually getting properly dressed everyday?
Maybe you are someone who is still heading out to work.
Or, maybe you're just like me and want NEED to see some colour.

Maybe blogging about fashion at a time like this is distasteful?
I know that personally, I'm finding haul videos and those encouraging us to shop from big brands a little hard to take.
Especially when some of these big brands have treated their workers so appallingly over the past couple of weeks.

I, for one, won't be shopping with a few retailers in the future and I'll remember who tried to do the right thing when it mattered and who crapped all over their staff while sitting on a nice fat bank balance.

Anyway, enough of that.

Let's get down to (colourful) business...

This is a bold and bright combination.
Anything that comes from the opposite side of the colour wheel is always a winner in my book!

Orange and Turquoise Spring Outfit • Fake Fabulous

I love the mix of bright orange and bright turquoise.
It's a happy combination that just works.

In this outfit I've added tan accessories and a bright mustard headband.

The headband is there to control my needing-a-cut-and-colour hair and to save me the bother of styling.
It looks okay in a photo but I think it would be a step too far for real life.

Which two colours would you put together for a bold look?
I'd love to know.

Lockdown Beauty • DIY Root Touch Ups

Josh Wood Honest Review | Fake Fabulous

Is your lockdown hair driving you bananas?

Mine resembles a scarecrow on a windy day.
My motivation to attempt to style it (and the rest of me) is at rock bottom.

For example, my current "look" (as I type this) is a pair of blue joggers, fluffy socks, a blue jumper, no makeup at all (yikes!) and a bandana.

The bandana is particularly fetching.

The unfortunate bandana situation is covering my desperately-needing-a-cut hair and my (gulp) GREY ROOTS.
Why oh why do I have NO grey roots at the back (where I couldn't see them and couldn't care less about them) and oodles around my face?

I have a feeling that we won't be making it to the salon anytime soon and I can't be bothered going out to buy a home dye OR (even if I had one) putting the home dye kit on.

SO...

I'm touching up my roots with root makeup.

I wanted to share my findings with you just incase you're in the same bandana boat as me!
(See what I did there! 😊)

{DISCLAIMER: I bought all of these products myself with my own money!}

My hair is undeniably a state!
It's in need of a good cut and a colour refresh, but my salon has closed down for the moment and I just need to get on with it.

Normally I'd have the home dye and the scissors out in a flash but I'm not in the mood so it's been a great opportunity to try some new touch up products.

The two liquid  Josh wood touch up products are on the top half of this (messy) parting.

One the bottom is Magic Retouch by L'oreal and the re-touch crayon by Josh wood.

Let's break it down...

JOSH WOOD Blending Brush

  • Darker Blonde (shades 6.5-7.5)... don't go too dark!
  • 20mls
  • £15
  • Lasts up to 3 washes

Pros:

Easy to use, especially around the front "halo"
A good colour for light brown to dark blonde hair
Makes it look like your darker roots are growing in and you have NO grey hairs!

Cons:

Expensive
Small volume that only lasts for a few applications

JOSH WOOD Root Smudger

  • Darker Blonde (shades 6.5-7.5)
  • 38mls
  • £12
  • Lasts up to 3 washes
Pros:

Easy to use
Good applicator and delivery system
Good tone of colour

Cons:

Still pricey but better value than the brush

JOSH WOOD Root Marker

  • Darker Blonde (for shades 6.5-7.5)
  • 2.5g
  • £8
  • To colour in stray greys!
Pros:

Convenient to carry in your bag for emergency strays

Cons:

Not a great colour
Waxy which leaves and ugly coating on the hair.
Only suitable for strays, not for touching up sections on the go.

Josh Wood Honest Review | Fake Fabulous

For comparison I sprayed a section of my hair with a spray-on cover-up.

L'OREAL magic retouch instant root concealer spray

  • Dark Blonde
  • 75mls (up to 25 uses)
  • £5.29
  • Lasts until washed out.
Pros:

Cheap
Quick and instantly effective

Cons:

Really messy!
Looks powdery close up
Colours your scalp
The colour isn't great (Not a natural root colour but okay to tie in with processed ends)

This powdery mess below is a closer shot of the Magic retouch powder by L'Oreal.
It looks okay from a distance but not so great close up.
Beware when applying as it goes everywhere and can give you extra age spots on your face!

UPDATE:

"Original result...

In conclusion, the Overall Winner is the Root Smudger.

The biggest volume for the lowest price.
A good colour and stays put... although not for 3 washes as claimed!"

Further use of this root smudge has revealed that the base tone must have a burgundy/pinkish tone because it's been pointed out to me a few times (luckily by family members and not Joe Public) that this product leaves a pink cast on the hair and scalp.

Despite using it carefully and as instructed it seems to migrate onto the scalp slightly leaving an unflattering and obvious cast.

I won't be using it again.

So the winner for me... after further testing... is the Blending Brush

It is pricey and doesn't last very long (especially if you have a lot of grey) but it has the most realistic finish and colour.

Josh Wood Honest Review | Fake Fabulous

Worst product?... Hmm, tough call...

The touch up stick wins it (or loses it!)

Poor results and too expensive.

Josh Wood Honest Review | Fake Fabulous

Best Match for my dyed ends?.. The L'Oreal spray.

BUT
It's powdery and looks fake up close.
Okay at the crown and inside the hair but not great at the hairline.

I'd love to know the following...

Whats happening with your hair and beauty routine?
Are you dressing up more than normal to lift your spirits?
Are you continuing with your usual routine?

Or, are you tramping-out like me?

(Slobbing around in joggers with messy hair)

No judgement here people!!

It's too Cold for a Denim Dress but I wore one anyway!

Denim dress, red shirt and tan boots | Spring Outfit Idea | Fake Fabulous

The weather outside is what my grandpa would have called "bracing".
Cold and windy.

The cobwebs get blown away when walking the dog that's for sure!
There have been plenty of sunny spells but also plenty of heavy showers.

The fields are flooded.
The river is HIGH.

It's what I would call BALTIC!

So today I'm sharing a completely impractical outfit.
Because... why not?

{The reality of my daily dressing this week has been jeans and jumpers, joggers and sweatshirts, my Boiler suit from THIS POST and various cosy cardigans... including my ugly cardigan from this post... brace yourself, it's a cracker!}

Keep Calm and Carry On • Red, Tan & Khaki • Spring Outfit

Red midi dress, khaki jacket & tan boots | Spring street style | Fake Fabulous

Being in the midst of the current covid-19 chaos (and uncertainty) is challenging.
There is a lot of noise in the world just now and it can be confusing.
The ONLY thing I feel certain about right now is the need to keep calm and carry on.
Carry on in every aspect of life, including producing my usual content for Fake Fabulous.

Some might say that blogging about clothes at a time like this trivial and disrespectful to those who are suffering.

To them I say; In times of trouble the silly things in life can be more important than we realise.

If Im stuck at home (well or not) I want...no, in fact I NEED something 'trivial' to read.
Something to distract me from the sadness.
Somewhere to take my mind for 10 minutes that isn't full of doom, misery and worry.

I sincerely hope my favourite bloggers continue to provide us with their amazing content (which is FREE by the way!)
So, in turn, I intend to continue producing my content too.
If I can give you a couple of minutes of distraction from the current chaos then I'll be more than happy.

My thoughts are consumed with the social, economic and human impact of this pandemic BUT I am powerless to change anything.
I'm worried about vulnerable friends and family, but worrying 24/7 isn't going to change anything.
We all need to contiune to cope and do our best.

My 5 point plan:

1. KEEP GOING

Continue to do what you do until the point comes (or maybe it doesn't come?) where you have to stop.
I don't mean irresponsible behaviour like hosting parties or going to the pub.

I mean keep doing (modified versions of) the things you enjoy.

Carry on reading.
Carry on painting and drawing.
Carry on knitting (it keeps me sane...ish!).
Carry on creating delicious meals.
Carry on gardening.
Carry on blogging!

Carry on as 'normal' until things are forced to change.

2. AVOID SOCIAL MEDIA

Stay away from the rabbit hole that is (very unhelpful) social media hysteria.
Most of what you read is BS.
Don't get caught up in it.
It won't help.
It will either infuriate you or make you worry more.

3. FORGET ABOUT GOOGLING!

Don't "google".
Whether it's symptoms, treatments, self-help...whatever your concerns.
Don't waste your time on random sites.
Stick to reputable information sites.
For example your government and official medical sites... like the NHS or similar.
Even quality news broadcasters like a little sensation to sell a story so they're not helpful if you're anxious.
{Don't even think a bout looking at what the tabloids are saying...shudder!}

4. LIMIT THE NEWS

Try not to watch or listen to the local, national or global news too much during the day.
Remember that only sensational (exciting/tragic/horrifying) stories make news.
We see a distorted image of reality via the headline grabbers.
It can be all consuming and feed anxiety.
Limit yourself to one news session per day.
OR...if you're really struggling avoid it completely until you feel you can cope again.

5. KEEP HEALTHY (physically and mentally)

Continue to exercise.
If you can't get to your gym or out for your usual run (for whatever reason) try finding an at-home exercise programme or class to follow.
There's plenty of free content out there!
YouTube is brilliant for that.

Follow the guidelines for hand washing and cleaning.
Forget about fancy products, specialist hand washes and gels or protective equipment.
Good old hot water and soap is best.

Using PPE (personal protective equipment) like masks and gloves in an inappropriate way can actually be worse than not using it at all, spreading disease instead of protecting.
At work we are trained in how to use these pieces of kit correctly and the importance of handwashing.

Eat well... good wholesome meals and plenty of veg.
Drink plenty of water and tea!

{I love tea so that one is for me!}

Mental health is just as important as physical health.

Make time to keep in touch with friends and family.
If you can't see them in person pick up the phone for a chat or get on FaceTime (or similar).
It makes a huge difference.

Keep up with your hobbies, learning or creative outlets.
Take time out to read (no newspapers!) or watch your favourite shows/films.
It could be a good opportunity to learn something new!

The last thing that will help with anxiety AND mental wellbeing is to do your bit!
Do all you can to help reduced the speed of this virus and protect the most vulnerable.
If you can help in anyway then get stuck in!
Checking if an elderly neighbour needs supplies could be a good place to start.

So, with my 5 point 'coping in the chaos' plan in mind, let's get stuck into no. 1.

Continuing to do what I do....
Wearing clothes and talking about them!

Red midi dress, khaki jacket & tan boots | Spring street style | Fake Fabulous

Today I'm sharing a tentative lightly layered spring look.

I't's certainly NOT warm here by any stretch of the imagination... hence the hat!
BUT...
The sun is shining (for the moment) and there is a mildness to the air.

So, in celebration of the sunshine, I've peeled back a layer or two and ventured out with (brace yourself) B.A.R.E L.E.G.S!!

{It was a bit of a shock to the system TBH}

Red midi dress, khaki jacket & tan boots | Spring street style | Fake Fabulous

This is a cosy and warm outfit but it has a spring-like feel to it.
Maybe it's the light tan boots?
Maybe the khaki army-style jacket?
Maybe the fresh red colour?
Maybe my bare shins?!

Whatever the reason, I felt full of the hope that springtime gives us... which felt great!

{I need all the help I can get to feel hopeful at the moment}

How are you coping with this current situation?
Are you directly affected?
How are you staying positive?
Do you have any tips for coping in a crisis?
Are you carrying on as normal for as long as possible?

It's NOT CHIC... but Like it!

More often than not my outfits are more fun, comfort-focused and quirky than chic or fashion forward.

Much as I love a trend, or a fashionable look, I much prefer to feel like ME.

I'm not very CHIC or fashionable.
I don't really try to be.
I know who I am.
I know what I like and I know it changes regularly!

Fashion and style are an expression of that.

Today I'm channelling my in farmworker-meets-fighter-pilot and I'm happy with that!

Digging out the Dungarees! Spring Outfit

Khaki Jacket, dungarees and white trainers over 40! Fake Fabulous

Dungarees.
You either love them or hate them.

Which camp are you in?

I'm definitely in the LOVE camp.

I don't care that they're not very flattering.
I don't care that they look like something a toddler should be wearing.
{Or a demon doll!}
I don't care that I look like I should be heading to a farm to muck out the pigs.
I don't care that they're not edgy, trendy or stylish.

None of that matters.

I love the way they look.
AND...

I love the way they make me feel.

Dungarees don't take themselves too seriously.
Dungarees make a whimsical statement.
Dungarees make me S.M.I.L.E.

That's what dressing should be all about, shouldn't it?

Of course there are occasions where dungarees are not suitable...

  • A job interview.
  • A wedding.
  • A corporate job.

BUT...
In my life these events are few and far between, so any day can be Dunga-day!
