Low Self Esteem | Faking Confidence in Red and Blue!

Red Ruffle Ted Baker Dress, Cobalt Suede Heels, Black Vintage Clutch | Self Esteem issues, over 40 |Fake Fabulous

How is your Self Esteem?

Low self esteem is very common, and it can be such a touchy subject, can't it?

In an ideal world we would all be confident in our abilities, and content with how we looked.
However, back in the real world, almost everyone suffers from a lack of self confidence (and low self esteem) from time to time.
{Whether they admit it or not!}
Unfortunately, some people suffer ALL of the time.

That horrible feeling that you are not quite good enough.
Sound familiar?

Lacking in self confidence is not just for the (so-called) 'normal' people of this world.
Even the seemingly 'perfect' people suffer.

In fact, sometimes the pressure to be perfect is SO great that the people who have immaculate facades to maintain feel even worse than the rest of us.
It's tougher at the top as all eyes are on them.
The world is waiting for them to mess-up so it can point and laugh.

Not Quite Good Enough.

These feelings of low self esteem, and self doubt, are more common than you might think.

Successful people can feel like a fraud, despite being hardworking and talented.
Beautiful people can feel ugly, and hate their features, despite being admired and envied.
Fit people can feel they look flabby and fat, despite being super-toned, strong and fast.
Crazy isn't it?

It's a hard pattern to break, and there's no quick fix, but the ONE thing we should never do when our own confidence is lacking is to try and drag other people down.
No matter who they are, no one deserves that.

Confidence Hangs on a Shoogly Peg!

True body confidence is something that few people have, and if they do it's hanging on a very shoogly peg... a Scottish phrase that means a wobbly and loose peg, or hook.
You could say "Hanging by a thread".

But we can ALL achieve it.
Well... fake it anyway!

Try having a look at THIS POST... 5 Ways to Fake Body Confidence if you're having a wobble.

It you appear confident then people will assume you actually ARE confident.
It's a great trick.

This red dress is the perfect 'faking it' dress.
Looking at someone wearing a dress like this, you would assume the wearer was super-confident.
Who else would wear a short, red and ruffle-covered dress?
Certainly no wallflower.
(Your secret would be safe as houses!)

Red Ruffle Ted Baker Dress, Cobalt Suede Heels, Black Vintage Clutch | Self Esteem issues, over 40 |Fake Fabulous

A little TOO much.

This dress is a little too much in SO many ways!
It's a little too Loud.
It's a little too Short.
It's a little too Shiny.
It's definitely a little too Ruffly!

Yes, it shows off my knobbly knees, and skinny blue legs.
Yes, it highlights my little baby belly.
But who really cares?

Other people don't even notice what we look like half of the time, and if they do we are almost instantly forgotten.

Other people care much less about how you look than you think!

At the end of the day, I felt good and my husband liked it too.
That's all that really matters, isn't it?

To be honest, husbands/partners/lovers tend not to notice (or care) about our little 'imperfections'. They simply don't see them, and can't understand what we are on about. Keep quiet about your 'flaws' and they will never know.

A vintage black clutch, and my favourite eye brooch finished things off nicely.
Simple and effective.
Sometimes all you need is the dress and the attitude!

How do you handle self confidence wobbles?
Do you try to fake it, or hide away until you feel better?

Do you suffer from low self esteem?

Navy, Grey and Brown, a Classic Work Combination.

Navy ME&EM tapered trousers, Tobacco wool jumper, silver backless loafers, grey dune bucket bag | Workwear over 40.

Navy and Brown is a classic combination.

Navy and Brown is a classic combination isn't it?
Navy Gent's Suit + Brown Brogues.
Navy Wool Dress + Brown Leather Belt.
Navy Coat + Tan Knee Boots.
Timeless and so Easy.

{See some Navy and Brown outfits HERE, HERE and HERE... not so "classic" in style but still using the colour combination.}

BUT...
Sometimes the 'classics' can feel a bit boring, can't they?
We can get tired of the same-old, same-old.

Luckily, just the tiniest of tweaks can make your old combinations (and old clothes) seem fresh and updated.
Phew!

This jumper (and trousers) are certainly "Knocking on a bit".

In fact, this jumper is so old that it is bobbling quite badly and my de-fuzzer won't work on it anymore.
I'm afraid it has been shaved so many times it's about to disintegrate.
A strong gust of wind and I'll be wearing shreds!

However, bobbles aside, this jumper is such a versatile item and I still love it!
So, if you have ANY de-bobbling ideas and tricks PLEASE share them.
I would be so grateful!
Or, please break it to me gently if this jumper has had it's day 😢.

{I've tried a wool comb, electric de-fuzzer and even a bic razor!}

Silver Velvet Backless Loafers to the Rescue.

This Navy trouser/Brown jumper combination was calling out for something extra to lift it out of the doldrums.
So these silver velvet backless loafers came to the rescue!
{I can't seem to see past them these days... see them styled HERE.}

Like slippers, they are so comfortable and just happen to be "on trend".
A trend that is (reasonably) practical and wearable?
Result!

Can you Wear a White Jumpsuit for Work?

White Jumpsuit, sleeveless black & White cardigan, silver backless loafers | Work look | Fake Fabulous

This white jumpsuit has been a favourite of mine since I bought it, and I never expected to like it very much at all!
In fact, I thought I would probably send it straight back.

I was trying something different, but thought the chances of it working for me were very slim.
However, it's important to keep trying new things.

But here it is again, it's third time at fakefabulous.
This white jumpsuit must be doing something right!

{See this jumpsuit styled HERE and HERE and more Jumpsuit outfits HERE, HERE and HERE.}

White Jumpsuit, sleeveless black & White cardigan, silver backless loafers | Work look | Fake Fabulous

This white jumpsuit is surprisingly versatile.

It's been pretty smart and very casual.
BUT....
Can you really make a white jumpsuit work appropriate?

White Jumpsuit, sleeveless black & White cardigan, silver backless loafers | Work look | Fake Fabulous

That all depends on your workplace but, for any creative or more casual environment, a few tweaks can make a jumpsuit like this one perfectly okay.

3 Easy Ways to Make a White Jumpsuit Work Appropriate.

  1. Adding smart heels or booties.
  2. Layering a blouse or fine knit underneath (depending on the season).
  3. Adding a blazer, or sleeveless jacket, over the top.

Today, I decided to keep this outfit simply black and white.
Black and white seems just a little smarter than other colour combinations, even when the shapes are more casual.
Black and white is a classic.

{See some more black and white outfits, HEREHERE and HERE.}

I kept the outfit loose and easygoing by adding a black and white sleeveless cardigan over the top.
The cardigan gave me bum coverage, and extra warmth for the Scottish summer chills.
It also added some interest to the outfit with it's striped bottom.

These silver backless loafers were the perfect partners for this look.
Comfortable and on-trend .
Of course, a heel would always be more flattering to the body but comfort won today.
These shoes are like slippers!

{P.S. I'm also wearing a nude cami and my culotte slip... money well spent!}

Can You Wear White to a Wedding? White and Black

White ruffle strapless dress with black trim, topshop unique shoes, black vintage clutch.

Wearing white to a wedding?
Is it the ultimate faux pas?

Can I start by saying that I did NOT (and would not) wear this outfit to a wedding.
But not because it's white.

I wouldn't wear this particular dress because it is strapless, and the strapless look is a very popular bridal style.... more on that in a moment.

This party outfit got me thinking about wedding attire etiquette.
What is socially appropriate, and what is seriously frowned upon?
Is wearing white a big wedding guest faux pas?

I had a look at a few online articles, and many say a definite NO to wearing white to a wedding.
Some with no quarter given.
Just NO, okay?
Hmmmm..... I'm not sure I agree.

I also read an article that accused any woman who would wear white at a wedding of being:

 A brazen attention grabber who wants to steal the bride's thunder, and spoil their day.

Wow....pretty harsh!

White ruffle strapless dress with black trim, topshop unique shoes, black vintage clutch.

Personally, I think that being overly 'sexy', or wearing skimpy clothing, is much more offensive than wearing white.
Micro miniskirts, short shorts and/or plunging necklines are a definate no-no in my book.
The bride should get all of the attention not someone's cleavage!

My decision to wear white (or not) would depend on the type of wedding I was attending, and the couple who were getting married.

For example:
A large modern wedding with a very lavishly dressed bride (and bridal party) and a "trendy" theme would allow me to feel more comfortable wearing white.... although there are boundaries!

(More on those later)

BUT, a low key wedding with a modestly dressed bride would mean white was a definate no-no.
The same goes for a very traditional wedding.
White would just seem rude.

How to wear white to a wedding without offending anyone

{Disclaimer: There is always going to be someone who has something negative to say about your outfit, but they would probably have a bit of a bitch regardless of your choices. So, ultimately, wear something that you feel comfortable in, and you feel is appropriate for the specific event you are attending.}

1. Don't wear all-white

It doesn't matter if your outfit is as un-bride-like as an outfit can be, all-white is (IMO) just rude.
Adding other colours looks great, but just because your bag is pink does not make your floor length white satin gown appropriate.
Wearing white needs careful handling.

2. Avoid bridal styles, fabrics and shapes

Avoid floor length hems, backless styles, white satin, white lace, chiffon overlays or strapless designs.
For obvious reasons.

3. Try trousers or a jumpsuit.

Wearing a more contemporary shape can make your white outfit seem less flashy and more effortless.
However, if you do choose a jumpsuit, see no.1... it still applies!

4. Use a white based pattern

White based florals look beautiful, and are a much easier way to wear white with minimum offending potential.
There are some stunning white-based patterned dresses out there.
Adding a complimenting coloured shoe, and bag, is an easy way to look wedding-guest appropriate.

5. Try soft pastels

If you love a monochromatic look, and simply have to go matchy-matchy, soft pastels look chic.
Pretty pastels are very close to the pale perfection that is white, without the potential contention.
Although cream, ivory and champagne are out of bounds!

White ruffle strapless dress with black trim, topshop unique shoes, black vintage clutch.
{These gold toes don't go with this outfit, my excuse is I couldn't find my remover!}

Of course, none of these "rules" are actually rules are they?
At the end of the day the only opinion that really matters is YOURS.

What do you think about wearing white to a wedding?
A BIG no-no?
Or, anything goes in this day and age?

Please let me know what you think!
I would love to hear from you on this contentious subject.

4 Ways to Wear Cut-Offs, over 40.

White Denim Cut-offs, Camel cashmere v-neck, yellow silk scarf, nude mules, over 40. | FakeFabulous

Each month Anna, Ann and I are styling a 'classic' item, and this month it's the turn of the (frankly scary) Cut-offs.
Cut-off shorts are definitely NOT a Scottish staple.
{Brrrrrrr!!!}

So I did a little DIY....
When I say DIY I mean hacking the legs off some jeans and sticking them in the washing machine to see if they frayed nicely.
Luckily they did.
Lazy DIY at it's best.

Perfect for this month's ping pong piece.

In order to make them more wearable for the Scottish summer I decided to try and smarten them up a bit.
{Well, as much as cut-offs can be smartened up!}

A plain cashmere jumper, silk scarf and neutral accessories.
Warm enough to compensate for my bare legs.
Light enough to feel "Summery".
Comfortable and practical.

Faking a Luxe Look | Satin & Metallics

Faking a Luxe Look | Satin wide leg trousers & Metallic shoes

This outfit is (for me) one of those classic combinations that never really dates.
The mix itself may fall in and out of fashion but, like most trends, always comes back in one form or another.
Wide trousers + Camisole + Blazer = Classic combination
It's a combination that's been 'done' countless times before, but always looks pulled together.
Smart and just sexy enough!

Faking a Luxe Look | Satin wide leg trousers & Metallic shoes

Today I am trying to 'fake' a luxe-looking outfit by mixing satins and metallics.
Muted satins mixed together can easily create a smart summer evening look.

This top is actually a chemise but the fabric is fine enough (and the trousers wide and loose enough) to wear as a pretty top.
Underwear as outerwear never really goes out of style, does it?

See This Post and This Post for more underwear inspired outfits.

{Both of which are chemises worn as tops.}

Faking a Luxe Look | Satin wide leg trousers & Metallic shoes

Adding a satin blazer over my satin 'top' keeps the luxe feel going.
Even the waistband on my trousers adds more shine to this look!

Metallic accessories (with a subtle sheen) work perfectly with satin fabrics for that 'expensive' vibe.

Luckily, feeling expensive doesn't need to really BE expensive.
You can find luxe-looking items at all price points, it's all in the cut and the fit.
Try the items on, and size up if the quality is not the best.
{A slightly looser fit is more forgiving with cheaper fabrics.}

However, these trousers and jacket were charity shop finds for less than £5.
Charity (or Thrift) shops are perfect places to find real luxe fabrics at a more purse-friendly price point.

Faking a Luxe Look | Satin wide leg trousers & Metallic shoes

When the budget is tight keep accessories to a minimum.
Low quality accessories can cheapen a look much more than cheap clothes.

Simple and classic accessories work best to 'fake' a luxe look.
I've stuck to plain shoes, clutch and simple silver hoops.
Timeless and not very attention-grabbing.

Having said that, high quality accessories can immediately make a cheaper outfit look expensive.
Money spent on good accessories is money well spent!

Faking a Luxe Look | Satin wide leg trousers & Metallic shoes

The great thing about this "faked" expensive outfit is that I don't feel precious about wearing it.
If I was wearing a pair of £400 trousers I would spend the evening worried about ruining them.
In a pair of £4.00 trousers I spend the evening having fun!

When Shopping isn't Fun!

Whistles Denim Bustier Dress, Chiffon Floral Blouse, Clarks Original Wedges | Fake Fabulous

I'm very lucky to be able to say that shopping has always been easy for me.
Budget restrictions aside, finding the right fit has never been a problem.

I'm the standard height and dimensions for my size, and don't (normally) bother trying things on in the changing rooms.
Shopping is quick and efficient.
Grab and go.
Freeing up more time for the fun side of a shopping trip.

{Read this post for my idea of the perfect day out 'shopping'... it's not all pounding that pavement!}

Even online shopping is a doddle.
Pop my size in the basket and "Job's a good un!"
Same for everyone else, right?
Erm?
Wrong!!!

My eyes have been well and truly opened when it comes to the potential misery a shopping trip can be.

{Shopping hell is bit like toothache, unless you experience it first hand you've not got a clue!}

More on that in a moment...

Whistles Denim Bustier Dress, Chiffon Floral Blouse, Clarks Original Wedges | Fake Fabulous

Back to this outfit.

Denim and floaty florals are a classic combination for me.
A bit little tough.
A bit little soft.
Adding simple neutral accessories makes for a quick and easy look!
Feminine and practical.

This interesting (but simple) denim dress was for sale on eBay, and I snapped it up quickly!
I cut off the straps because I wanted a 'bustier' look BUT, the straps were actually too short for my shoulders anyway.
This is more and more common with "off the peg" clothes these days.

Manufacturers assume that if you are a certain dress size then you are either short or tall.
Of course the manufacturers have to go with the most common measurements but, sometime I feel that the clothes don't really fit anyone!

After discussing this problem with a few women, we struggled to find anyone who is the "normal" shape or size.
Does this woman exist beyond the world of fit models?

Clarks Originals Sand Suede Ankle Strap Wedge | Fake Fabulous

Back to shopping hell...

As someone who is a pretty standard size with average proportions (and height) shopping has never really been a problem, so I couldn't understand why women said they hated it!
Hate shopping?
What are you talking about?!
Surely it's easy and fun?

Then two things happened...

Firstly, brands stated distorting their classic proportions, and buying trousers was no longer "Grab and Go".
Slowly but surely trouser shopping began to cause me problems.
Waists too big, tight on the bum and half-mast lengths.
Who do these trousers fit?
Whatever happened to popping into your favourite shop and picking up your size without needing to try anything on?

THEN.... the big eye opener.

Shopping with a friend (for her mum) seemed like a great idea.
Shopping is easy and her mum's figure just needed a few specific style elements to make her look amazing.
Petite with a very large bust, and teeny waist... feminine and beautiful!
I knew what we needed.
Easy.

Off out we went with our list of colours and preferred styles.
I was there to help and have fun along the way.
Except is was NO fun!

I realised (very quickly) that nothing was suitable.... and I mean NOTHING.

The latest trends and colours were everywhere, but they had not been modified to suit the size on the swing tag.

For example;
A round-neck, ruffle-sleeve top looks great on small frame, and a neat bust.
BUT, on a size 16 bust there should be some modification to flatter the more rounded body.
Simple touches to make a curvier woman look her best.
Bust darts to stop the mono-boob-shelf-effect.
Some shaping at the waist.
Maybe even changing the neckline into a V to allow larger chests room to breathe.
None of this happened.
The same shapeless items were just scaled up or down.
Unflattering and unsuitable.
How frustrating!
This wasn't any fun at all.

For the first time in my life the whole shopping experience felt disappointing.
We left with nothing.
A first for me.

I get it now!

I get why women love shoes, handbags and scarfs so much!
I see why we enjoy shopping for our lipsticks and nail polishes.

Accessories and beauty products can always be relied upon to fit.
Clothes (as I found out) not so much.

This is why I think it is so important to try different brands and venture into unusual shops.
Don't rule out any brand or any store.
Shop around.
Browse.
Take your time.
Take notes.
NEVER leave shopping for an important item until the last minute.
Shopping (for some women) takes time and serious effort.

Hat's off to you ladies that manage to make it look so easy!

As for my friend's mum?
Well, that's an ongoing project and a job for another day.... Wish us luck!

What brands fit you well?
Do you LOVE or HATE shopping?
How do you get clothes to fit you properly?
Do you alter them or "make do"?

Please share your shopping story in the comments... I would LOVE to hear it!

Wearing Yellow & Bold Florals | Unexpected Bargains.

Yellow off-the-shoulder top & Bold Floral Maxi skirt | Fake Fabulous

This is a bright and cheerful outfit isn't it?
Yellow is a smile-making colour, and the bold patterned skirt is certainly not blending into the background.
An outfit as bright and bold (in colour) as this one always gives me a spring in my step!

However, this outfit is NOT what I am actually wearing while I write this post.
It's far too cold and wet for that!

Yellow off-the-shoulder top & Bold Floral Maxi skirt | Fake Fabulous

{I'm wearing the yellow trousers in this post and the jumper from this post... plus a thermal layer or two!}

I wore this colourful look last week as we were enjoying lovely temperatures and plenty of sunshine. It seems like a distant memory at the moment.

You'll never guess where I got this skirt...

I picked this skirt up in Lidl!
Yes, the bargain supermarket.
While we were in getting our usual provisions I spotted this flowery maxi in the bargain bucket for an cheap-as-chips £3.50.
I have been looking for a bold maxi skirt so I considered it fate (that's my story and I'm sticking to it 😇).

The skirt is just as good quality as the striped one I have from a big high street shop... and that was a lot more than £3.50.

I am always on the look out for bargains, and finding unusual pieces from unusual places is a great buzz.
Keeping an open mind when shopping is always a good idea.

Yellow off-the-shoulder top & Bold Floral Maxi skirt | Fake Fabulous

The bold pattern on this skirt was just what I was looking for, and it goes perfectly with this bright yellow bardot top.
I've got such a 'thing' for yellow at the moment, it's a cheerful colour, and perfect for both dreary and sunny days.

Yellow off-the-shoulder top & Bold Floral Maxi skirt | Fake Fabulous

A jersey maxi skirt, like this one, is just like wearing a pair of joggy bottoms... with only one leg.
So easy and so comfortable.
It's like cheating getting dressed!

This bright yellow off the shoulder top is comfortable and easy-going too.
BUT...
The off the shoulder style does have a tendency to 'pop off' the shoulders.
The instagramers make it look so chic and easy!

I must admit to giving up on pulling it back into position, and taking my arms out, wearing it as a tube top for most of the day.
It worked really well as the elastic band was tight enough.

A bold duo like this is easy to accessorise with neutral sandals and a mini bag.

{My brooch was a last minute addition because it makes me smile, but the outfit really doesn't need any additional colour does it?}

Do you have an off the shoulder top that keeps pops out of position?
What do you do to stop it, or fix it?
Please let me know in the comments, I would love to hear your tips and tricks.
