Trends to Try | Super 'Hero' Cardigans | Spring Outfit

Culottes, white trainers, neon and a statement knit | Fake Fabulous

I started flicking through a glossy magazine today...

The imagery was beautiful but the outfits were eye-wateringly expensive and sometimes simply UGLY (and not in a good way).
Then I turned the page...

Suddenly I felt a warm and fuzzy fashion-loving feeling.
A trend I could embrace wholeheartedly.

The SUPER cardigan.

I love the colour blue in all its guises!
It's such a pretty and positive colour.
Calm and tranquil.
Cool and soothing.
The perfect colour for our busy modern lives.

I especially love the fact that there is a shade of blue to suit everyone and it seems to be universally adored by men and women alike!

8 Steps to Unique and Effortless Chic

8 Steps to unique and effortless chic | Fake Fabulous

Effortless chic.
It has to be the ultimate style goal, doesn't it?

(I'm guessing that if you've clicked on this post then it's probably something that interests you.)

I love that stylish vibe that some people emanate.
The art of looking like you've thrown on your clothes and they just happen to fall beautifully into place.

There are many effortlessly stylish women that I admire.
Some have their own style.
Some have someone creating their style for them but still look great.

I'm well aware that most celebrities have stylists and amazing resources at their disposal that create that 'effortless' look.

I also know that many women copy other people's outfits to create the look they want.
Fair play to them.

The women I really admire are those who create a look that is unique to them.
A look that feels real.

Effortless dressing tips are all over the internet.
More often than not these tips involve words like...

  • Minimal.
  • Classic.
  • Clean lines.
  • Neutrals.
  • Monochrome.

These things can look amazing if you suit those kinds of clothes.
Or, if you are after that "French girl" chic or even the cookie-cutter-insta-babe look.

BUT,
What if you love a bit of colour?
Or a pattern?
Or, even better, a clash of patterns and a riot of colours?

Is it possible to look effortless with an individual personality?

Style tips for effortless chic.

{Before I make a start on these tips I must tell you that I am certainly no style angel.
I'm guilty as charged of many fashion crimes.
I've worn countless questionable outfits and had loads of fun doing it!
Personal style is exactly that... personal.
Fashion is supposed to make us feel good and be enjoyable.
If you disagree with any (or all) of my tips that's fine with me!}

1. Don't overdo it with your Hair (or Makeup).

This is THE element that can transform an outfit from chic to cheap (or vice versa) in a heartbeat.

When I look at chic outfits (or chic women) it's often the hair and makeup that makes or breaks a look for me.

And, much as I hate to say it, as we get older overdone hair and makeup does more damage to our look than it did in our 20's.

  • Bad stripey highlights.
  • Brassy dye jobs.
  • Rock-solid hairstyles (unless it's a spiked crop)
  • Over straightened bobs and/or fringes.
  • Too-Perfect curls.

Pair these bad dos with a cake face and....ugh... you've added 15 years to your look in 5 (or probably more like 50) minutes.

Take instead...
A tousled wave.
A casual tuck behind the ear.
A thrown-up topknot.
A mussed up pixie.
Add a dewy skin and a red lip, or a softly smokey eye and a slick of lip gloss and wow.... one chic lady!

2. Chose Comfort.

Comfort is KEY.
There is nothing effortless (or chic) about being uncomfortable.
Sore feet from bad shoes or a body that's being squeezed, restricted and squashed by shapewear?
It shows on your face.

Comfort is so important.
This applies to both physical and mental comfort.

Which brings me to my next two points...

3. Only real love will do.

Loving a look simply because you love it on someone else (or in a magazine advert) is NOT enough.

You MUST love your clothes and they must love you back.
Anything you pull out of your wardrobe should make you feel good.
Anything you wear should make you look good.

Donate anything that doesn't fit or makes you feel bad about yourself.
Clothes that depress you NEED to go.
Anything you use to hide behind (or blend into the background with) needs to go.

Opening a wardrobe should make us feel empowered.
Creative.
Equipt to put the best version of ourselves forward.
Ready to face the challenges of the day.

Opening a wardrobe to items that remind us of how much weight we've gained over the years (or lost) is not good for our mental well-being.
Be ruthless with depressing clothes.
You deserve to be happy every time those wardrobe doors open.

4. Buy Quality

Always pick quality fabrics over cheap polyester.
Quality fabrics not only look better.
Wash better.
Wear better.
Feel better (on the body).
Last longer.

They're also better for the planet.

Don't even get me started on cheap shoes!
Cheap shoes ruin an outfit.

Quality doesn't need to be expensive.
Scour those discount websites and charity shops.
Cashmere, Wool, Leather, Silk and suede are all there waiting to be discovered!

5. Avoid obvious LABELS and LOGOS.

This might ruffle a few feathers BUT flashy status-symbol labels can certainly cheapen an outfit.
Especially if there's a whole load of big-name logos piled up together.

  • The LV bag.
  • The Gucci belt.
  • The Chanel earrings.

By "cheapen" I don't mean 'cheap'.
Everyone knows these pieces cost a pretty penny.
By cheap I mean tacky.
"Look how much money I have.... LOOK EVERYONE!!"
Obvious wealth flashing is not stylish.
It's distasteful.

Of course, if you're buying the big brands for the quality then go for it (I'm eyeing up a pair of Prada pumps for that reason) but reign in the brash logos.

The most stylish women I know don't need a big logo to validate their position in the style stakes.

6. Use your Local Tailor

Whatever you own will look (and feel) 100X better if it fits your body properly.
Forget about the body you once had or the body you're going to have.
Dress the body you have just now.
Today.

A tailor will make your clothes fit like a glove and feel great.
In turn, you will look great...
Get the idea?!

7. Forget the Rules!

BORING rules make me yawn.
When I was looking around the internet for other people's opinions on effortless dressing almost every post I read (and every video I watched) talked about...

  • Neutrals.
  • Monochrome.
  • Black.
  • Plain.
  • Simple.
  • Clean lines.
  • Classic accessories.
  • White shirts.
  • Camel coats.... etc, etc, etc...

COME ON PEOPLE!
I'm falling asleep here.

I'm bored to tears with generic outfits worn by women that all want to look the same.
Give me some colour!
Some personality.
Some oomph!!

Do your own BOLD thing.
Clash if you want to.

Many of the stylish women I admire you'll already know well... find them on my sidebar under blogs I love.

Why not check out these effortless women you may (or may not) know.
They have an amazing bold style with buckets of personality!

8. Dress like a ghost!

This last point is supposed to be a bit of fun BUT it's not a bad thought to hold onto...

Each day you get dressed think to yourself:

"If I die today am I happy with this outfit as my 'forever' outfit?"

If you had to spend the rest of eternity in one outfit would you be happy for your ghost to be wearing what you have on at this moment?

If the answer is "NO!" you might want to go and change!

The moral of this story is to put your best foot forward each day.

Bonus Style tip:
Irons, lint rollers and wool combs.
Never underestimate the power of grooming.
Forget spending time on perfecting that unflattering helmet hair.
Use your time to make sure what you are wearing is clean, pressed and bobble free!

What do YOU think?

How do you define effortless style?
What about labels and logos?
Do you think I'm talking rubbish and LOVE to flash them?

Please share your thoughts... you know I love to read them!

What I wore on a Cold Spring day | Pastel Outfit

Pastel rainbow jumper and yellow trousers. Cold weather Spring outfit.

Let's clear one thing up before I start...
I really don't like pastels that much.
Pastels make me think of two three things:

  1. Little old ladies in twinsets and pearls.
  2. Little girls in frilly dresses and buckle shoes.
  3. Party treats and birthday cakes.
I certainly don't want to look like no.1 or no. 2.
Number 3, on the other hand, is not a million miles away from this outfit!

The more I look at these pictures the more I realise that I'm channelling the party cake look here.
Those layers of coloured sponge and the icing-like ruffle.
Yummy!

Pastel rainbow jumper and yellow trousers. Cold weather Spring outfit.

Cake-inspired fashion aside there is also something childish about this outfit.

I know that I said I didn't want to look like a little girl BUT (ironically) the jumper I'm wearing is from the kids' department.

{I have removed a few rainbow sequins from the front of it but it's still a little girl's jumper.}

What can I say?
I liked it.
It fitted me.
I bought it.

Pastel rainbow jumper and yellow trousers. Cold weather Spring outfit.

I'm also digging out my old yellow trousers from 2017.
I've worn them SO often since I bought them, they've been a great buy.
Unfortunately, they're starting to look tired now and have lost their shape a little.

(They were never a fantastic fit. Next clothes never are on me. But they're fitting less well now.)

However, I'm determined to get another season out of them... or two!

{You can see a few more yellow trouser outfits HERE.}

Pastel rainbow jumper and yellow trousers. Cold weather Spring outfit.

I'm also wearing a pair of lilac converse that I picked up brand new in their box at a local charity shop for a couple of pounds.
Just what I was looking for!

I must say at this point that cropped trousers, baggy jumpers and very flat shoes are NOT the most flattering of shapes to wear together.
This combination will seriously shorten your legs.

My legs are long (compared to my body) and they've still been visually chopped in half by this outfit.

I'm just about getting away with it (... maybe...ish??) but it's tough.

If your legs are on the shorter side, or your body is proportionally longer than your legs, avoid this unflattering combination.

However, if you love a cropped trouser then all you need is a slight heel to give a bit of oomph and cheat a longer limb.
An easy fix if you can bare it.
(A platform trainer or a wedge sandal would be perfect.)

Are you a pastel fan?
Do you ever dress like a party cake or unflattering combinations like flat shoes and cropped trousers?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Night Sweats? Day Sweats? Common Causes and Ways to Cope | Become

Night Sweats | Common Causes and Ways to Cope | Become | Fake Fabulous

Can you relate?

All too often these days, I find myself waking up in the middle of the night soaking wet.
Drenched in sweat.
My nightclothes are damp and I need to change or I get chilled pretty quickly.
My chest is often running with sweat as if I've been working hard at the gym.
It's pretty gross!

Night sweats are no fun and can really disrupt our sleep causing a whole host of problems from grouchiness and eye bags to lowered immunity and illness!

Night sweats can be caused by many things.
Some are pretty obvious and easily fixed.
Some are a part of life and getting older.
Some causes are more sinister and need the attention of a doctor.
{Always see your doctor if you have concerns and never google your symptoms... it's always terrifying!}

Some Possible causes of your Night Sweats:

  • Your room is too warm or the blankets are too warm.
  • Hormones! Pre-menstrual? Perimenopausal?... Hormones going crazy?  We girls have it tough!
  • Full on Menopausal hot flushes (or hot flashes).
  • Medication for anything from migraine to blood sugar regulators... and lots more besides!
  • Certain illnesses from the common cold to more serious conditions like HIV, TB, and certain cancers.
  • Neurological conditions like Parkinson's.

How to Cope with Night Sweats:

  • Accept what's happening and try not to stress about it! Getting uptight just makes things worse.
  • Try some meditation and/or deep breathing. It will help you relax and nod back off.
  • Keep your room cool and airy.
  • Avoid heavy (high tog) blankets and duvets.
  • Wear sweat-wicking fabrics... but be aware that not all sweat-wickers are created equal!
  • Drink plenty of water and have a glass next to your bed.

Sweat-wicking fabrics won't stop you sweating (or getting those flushes!) but they will help the situation be less uncomfortable.
The fabric will allow the moisture to escape then dry quickly to prevent that awful cold and clammy feeling!

I was so happy to be sent a few different pieces to try from the Femtech brand BECOME.

“Become’s™ ground breaking Anti-Flush Technology™ combines a seamless knit and flat thread to create a refined fabric that cools the body during sudden surges in heat. The material works to wick away moisture by evaporating it quickly and effectively, keeping you dry and comfortable – whilst Become’s™ hi-tech fabric controls odour with its anti-microbial finish, creating a barrier between the bacteria and the fabric which immobilises the odour source and locks it in. Finally, as the body starts to cool down the fabric works to lock in heat, avoiding those post-flush chills. This revolutionary formula ensures the wearer remains at ease and confident throughout.”

Each piece is wrapped like a gift and was a pleasure to open...

The fabrication is designed to deal with sudden (rapid) increases in temperature and sweating, like menopausal flushes.
AND it doesn't get smelly like other wicking fabrics can... an essential part for me!
(There is nothing as gross as sweating into cheap polyester... instant stink!)

I've been putting the BECOME items I received through some rigorous road-testing.
No messing about here ladies!

I've worn the vest tops and briefs for normal daily activities and I've also tried wearing them as a 'PJ set' for bed.
They have worked well both during the day AND at night.
My night's sleep felt more comfortable and less clammy!

The fabric feels nice but the briefs are a little on the neat side and gave me a VPL.
I'm not overly fleshy so it might be worth sizing up if you prefer a smoother look.
(The cut of these briefs will never look totally smooth under clothes though, so be aware of that!)

I've also worn the vest tops and long sleeved top under outfits for warmth and comfort.
You know how I love a base layer and theses pieces worked beautifully under my outfits.
They reduce overheating and seem to regulate temperature.

I've also worn the pink vest top to a high impact class at the gym.
(It looked great with a bold pair of leggings!)

I thought I was going to expire during the class and could hardly catch my breath but my sweat was wicked away beautifully by this little vest top.
AND... no whiff at the end of the session.
Result!

Layering a Shirt under a Red Dress | Masculine/Feminine Outfit

Layered White Shirt under a Red Midi Dress | Fake Fabulous

Today's outfit is a mixture of layers (what else!?) and masculine touches that were fun to wear, warm and comfortable.
What more do you need from a daytime look? 💖

I'm layering a fit and flare midi dress that is a little too low cut at the front for this time of year {What is it with bare chests and feeling seriously COLD?!} with a masculine shirt.

I've been layering polonecks under EVERYTHING this season so I thought I would try a shirt for a change.

(As I type this I'm wearing a poloneck under a shirt, under a jumper.
Layers are still a necessity here. 10ºC today and really windy!)

Layering a shirt under a dress involves strategic tucking-in.
You have to put all 'looking sexy under your dress' notions to one side and get your shirt firmly tucked into your tights or pants.
There is no other way to do it I'm afraid.
Bulky bits are never a good look!

Having said that, I DO have my eye on a shirt-topped bodysuit with a thong back.
No VPL there but I do wonder how comfortable it can be??
I might need to investigate further!

4 ways to MATCH your Accessories with Style | Fresh Spring Outfit

Light and Bright Casual Spring Outfit | Accessorising over 40 | Fake Fabulous

Much as I love a CLASH of colour I also like to do a little matching from time to time!
However, being too "matchy-matchy" with accessories can easily look dated and frumpy.
Being overly match-obsessed can come across as safe and lacking in imagination.

We've all seen (and probably worn!... I know I have) outfits that are so thoughtfully accessorised they look boring.
Think of a classic black and white dress worn with a red shoe, red nails, a red clutch, a red lip and a red skinny belt.
Too much.
Too 'done'.

{TWEE-NESS ALERT! Here is a classic "Matching belt and shoes" look that I wore... If I was wearing this top and jeans tomorrow my accessories would look VERY different!}
